Mahler and Beethoven - great symphonies introduced by Vladimir Jurowski: January 2014

LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski introduces Mahler's monumental Sixth Symphony, and explains why he feels that Beethoven needs to be performed regularly by all orchestras.

We begin January with three concerts at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall featuring Mahler, Beethoven, Brahms and James MacMillan, conducted by our Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski. In this edition of the LPO's monthly podcast Vladimir Jurowski explains why he feels that Mahler's monumental sixth symphony is the composer's first truly mature symphony; how important he feels it is that the orchestra regularly performs Beethoven; and the effect that period instrument performances has on his interpretation.

Featured recording: Julian Anderson - Orchestral works (The Crazed Moon, Fantasias, The Discovery of Heaven). LPO-0074 - available on itunes or as CD.
