James MacMillan Viola concerto introduced - February 2014

Composer James MacMillan talks about creating his new viola concerto, recently given its world premiere by the LPO and Lawrence Power at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.

We began January with the world premiere of James MacMillan's viola concerto, written for soloists Lawrence Power and conducted by our Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski. In this edition of the LPO's monthly podcast we join James MacMillan on the stage of Royal Festival Hall where he spoke about the work to Gillian Moore, Head of Classical Music at Southbank Centre. Find out how he made the decision to write a viola concerto, how he communicated emotions through the medium of music without words or images, and his passion for combining different instrumental colours that leads to his masterful orchestration.

Excerpts of MacMillan's Viola concerto recorded at the world premiere performance on 15 January 2014, used by kind permission of Boosey and Hawkes.
