What has Israel learned through this story? They are to be strong and keep all that
is written in the Book of the Law of Moses. The promise has been fulfilled, and YHWH has been faithful. Finally, 400 years since Genesis 12, Abraham’s children are in the land. What does Joshua charge them with? Worshipping the one true God, and not turning to the left or to the right; not mixing with other nations so that they don’t end up bowing down and worshipping their false gods. Will Israel be faithful? Will they remain true to their one God? Sadly, when we read on we discover that the answer is no. But God is faithful. Even when he is punishing and chastising his children it is done out of love and he has not forgotten his promises. God will be faithful—even to the point of entering his land and his people himself and becoming the ultimate sacrifice for their sins.
