A piece of ethnomusicology for you, actually Madagascar was isolated a bit from mainland Africa, though it was an active port/base for commerce in the Indian Ocean basin since at least from about 100 BCE if not earlier. So their early musical influence from outside was by sea, quite possibly from when the ancient Egyptians were hauling stones for the Giza Pyramids from quarries along the red Sea. The so called Silk Road also had shipping routes by sea. There is a passage in Herodotus's history in he reports the "Phoenicians" describing their origin as having come from the Erthyean (Red) Sea and that was recorded around 600 BCE. ....and Thanks for the music.
