King David’s prayer of repentance in Psalm 51 strikes a nerve with us, because it identifies a basic human longing that all of us have experienced. Some might grow skilled at silencing that longing or suppressing it. But all of us have had it: the basic human longing to be free from our past. Whether that past is 50 years ago or just last night, whether that past involves blatant, public debauchery or private, well-hidden vices, we all in some way long to have a clean start and shake the filth that clings to us.
