Getting Started in Sidewalk Astronomy, an interview with Jeff Setzer, recorded on July 12, 2012
Jeff Setzer is currently the president of the Northern Cross Science Foundation, an astronomy and science club in Southeastern Wisconsin. The NCSF is a club that has a solid core of public outreach with many sidewalk astronomy events and public viewing nights.
This type of outreach is an exciting and rewarding experience. One reason is that the event is in a non-science setting. Folks who are looking through the scopes at a sidewalk astronomy event were not expecting to see the rings of Saturn or the craters of the Moon that day. That's makes their “ Galileo moment” even more special.
In this interview, I discuss with Jeff how the NCSF set up their sidewalk astronomy event at the mall. In addition we discuss the part that social media and dark sky advocacy plays.
