Today’s episode pulls back the covers on just a few of the the more soulful sample sources from “Madvillainy”, the brilliant 2004 album by Madlib and MF DOOM. As per usual with many of the Madlib-produced projects of that era, ‘Madvillainy’ is ridiculously dense with sample material that can be best described as “eclectic”.
Many of the samples used in 'Madvilliany' aren’t just from the usual suspects of opening cuts, breaks, or bridges, but often two or three measures hidden within a larger phrase that take on a whole new prominence repurposed in a new light. Case in point: I dare you to not make it through that Z.Z. Hill cut without itching for the drums from “Fancy Clown” to cut in.
