It is easy for us to decide that the other eleven disciples ought to be ashamed for not stepping out of the boat. Before we criticize those eleven too much, we must realize many of us choose to stay in the "boat" that is our comfort zone. Any time the Lord commands us to step out in faith to do a great work for Him and we allow doubt, fear or the need for safety to take control of us, we are refusing to leave the boat. That refusal may mean we miss out on the blessings that the Lord has for us.
There is a great lesson here. We expect Jesus to call us when everything is going great, but He often calls us in the midst of the storm and asks us to rely on Him. When that happens we are often too afraid to leave our comfort zone, but I believe God wants to show us a miracle so great only He can get the credit.
