Blues Drummers Part #1
Fred Below claimed that he changed the pattern of Blues drumming in the early 50´s setting the 8 bar and the pattern called the Backbeat. But some years before Judge Riley had delivered the Chicago 2 & 4 with his sessions for Lester Melrose laying down the beat of the Chicago sound of the 30´s and 40. Wherever the foundation of the Backbeat lies truly on Baby Dodds, Gene Krupa, the slap bass of Western Swing, or Big Boy Crawford´s double bass, it would develop through the Blues drumming of James Peck Curtis, Wille Nix, Houston Stokes, Elga Edmonds, Elgin Evans, Earl Philips, Al Duncan, Clifton James, Odie Payne, S.P. Leary, Sonny Freeman and many others.
