This show was 15th in the global alternative rock chart and 17th in the global punk chart.
This week's episode of Night Society is all about England. Punk and all its offshoots that would eventually have heavy influence on alternative rock found fertile ground in England from the 1970s onward. Between John Peel's radio show and MTV's nascent influence, English bands would see their reach extend around the globe in the 1980s. And when the alternative explosion came in the early 1990s, plenty of English acts were in on the bonanza.
This episode is by no means an exhaustive document of those times, but I think it would make a nice primer for anybody looking to learn about England's influence on music in the last 40 years. And for those of you who are already familiar with the punk, post-punk, new wave, shoegaze, goth, and other acts on the playlist, it should be a pleasant ride past some beloved landmarks. Enjoy!
