With the release of my second book of poetry, Locus, I created this mixtape as an homage to the Pilipinx DJ crews I grew up listening to at house parties, school dances, cotillions, etc. Back then you could hear a lot of Latinx freestyle and electro funk, along with some high NRG and even British new wave-- which was very popular in the Philippines. The rap music during the 80s on the West Coast had more of an electronic (similar to east coast hip hop groups Newcleus and Soulsonic Force) and west coast funk vibe that made a harder turn when artists like Too Short and NWA came up. Latinx freestyle, though, was one of the only genres at the time to feature Pilipinx artists and had some of the first Fil-Am run record labels. With this I just wanted to try to re-capture a little bit of that sound, a little bit of that music.
