Today we're going to discuss the history of Chechnya that leads up to the First Chechen War in the mid-1990's. This was the Chechen struggle for independence from the Russian Federation. First, we need to understand that the Chechens are a distinct ethnic group and are not the same as the Russians. They have a different culture and language and even physical features. Second, Islam came to Chechnya in a rather unique way. The Chechens accepted Islam similarly to how many African-Americans accepted Islam.
