IDS graduate interviewed on organising Delhi One Billion Rising campaign

An IDS graduate Sakshi Bhalla helped bring thousands of people onto the streets of Delhi to campaign against sexual violence. Listen to the interview which Sakshi reflects on her time at IDS in 2012 and how it has influenced her thinking. Courses on power relations, gender and sexuality and development had given her a real insight into the difficulties women faced in her own country around their stereo typical portrayal in the media and the everyday violence that they endured. After the terrible gang rape and death of a young women in December in Delhi Sakshi attended a seminar by One Billion Rising founder Eve Ensler, the author of “The Vagina Monologues, and was inspired to get involved in the campaign.

Thank you for this audio cast. I only learned about One Billion Rising recently and am excited to hear about what is happening worldwide. This interview was inspiring. I plan to attend the next OBR in 2014 where ever I am in the world as an expression of my stand against all violence towards humans, especially women and girls. Saskshi is correct in stating that the only way to end the violence in a patriarchal society is to begin with challenging the stereotypes thru finally being able to engage in conversations as to why they exist and how to change them.
