In the mid-90s, I spent a few evenings with a friend who I used to bump into at indie nights in Nottingham in the 80s. We'd both moved to Sheffield, and it was good to see him after losing touch for a few years. He'd got rid of almost all his old indie records (I think he'd kept the Swell Maps) and had a slim bunch of weird-looking vinyl (almost all brutal techno from Europe), plus a small pile of expensive CDs (mainly on the Stockhausen-Verlag label, but a few Birtwhistles and some English hymnal). Meagre resources, great DJ. I'd never heard those early Stockhausen electronic etudes before, nor most of the techno (I guess I found out later that a lot of these records were "Gabber"), so I asked him to make me a mixtape that alternated these two things.
