Make a Way for the King (Matt 3:1-17)

Pastor Ben Trahan
Make a Way for the King
Matthew 3:1-17

John the Baptist: The Herald of the King (vs. 1-6)
His Message (vs. 1-2)
o Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand
o John was preparing the people for Jesus’ ministry

His Identity - John came in the spirit and power of Elijah (Mal 4:5-6)
o John & Elijah Both:
-Both wore a garment of camel hair and a leather belt (2 Kings 1:8)
-Lived out in the wilderness
-Preached repentance
o Jesus said John the Baptist was the Elijah prophesied about in Malachi 4:5-6
His Baptism: Of Repentance, preparing them for the Messiah

The Baptism of the King (vs. 13-17)
Why Did Jesus Need to Be Baptized?
o To fulfill all righteousness (Necessary for OT priests before they began service)
o Officially announced Jesus’ ministry
o Jesus was “like us” in every way (Heb. 2:17)

We are preparing people for Jesus’ return!
