(Hebrews 10:32-34) Jesus is the one that made the life-altering statement, “the one endures until the end will be saved.” That really is the subject before us in the remainder of Hebrews, what the great Reformers called, The Perseverance of the Saints. It is a doctrine that has a dual tension. On the one hand we are assured of the absolute sovereignty God in salvation (cf. Jonah 2.9; 1 Cor. 1.30; Rom. 8.29-30; Eph. 1.3-5). On the other hand we are confronted with the reality that believers, as Jesus taught, must endure to the end! It has to be made clear that Scripture does not affirm two polar opposite realities but that our perseverance is the occasion or the means and the attending circumstance surrounding His sovereign will to keep us.
