SoulSistas And SoulBruthas! This one is loosely inspired by, and uses a few clips from the film Paris Blues. The film stars Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier and one of the themes is how Jazz is more respected and admired outside of the US, it's birthplace. I think it's still a bit true although there is a strong group of young Jazz cats that are keeping the art alive and well. This mix has quite a few live performances, as I think that's where you really get the true essence of what these cats do. I tend to love the analogy that a lot of these craftsmen use in that they are participating in a musical conversation. You've got the super workout by piano whiz Gene Harris and the FUNKY Three Sounds rhythm section live at the It Club. Organ great Jimmy Smith with Root Down (And Get It), which you Hip-Hop headz will no doubt recognise as the basis for The Beastie Boys and their version of Root Down. And Grant Green, one of the baddest guitar players ever. ENJOY! Peace and SOUL, HSB DaveB.
