¡Guayaba Jazz! // No.008°
A selection of the legendary folkloric dance music of Northern Brazil named Carimbó for the curimbó drums made of hollowed out tree-trunks on which the rhythms of the music are played. A traditional Carimbó band had two curimbó drums -- one larger providing a deeper bass sound and one smaller, producing a lighter sound -- alongside string instruments, maracas, wooden flutes & vocalists.
As the sound of Carimbó developed and the acclaim of its preeminent musicians grew, it was influenced by popular musical styles and rhythms from neighbouring countries in Latin America & the Caribbean, where the infectious dancefloor sounds of cumbia & merengue were sweeping across national borders.
Verequete, Cupijó & Pinduca were all masters and played with some of the most legendary combos of the genre; in this selection you can hear the finest at work, and encounter the abundant & mighty sound -- O Legítimo Carimbó!
