Here's a tribute to an iconic club session that is no longer with us as the force it once was, hence the 'Empty Dancefloors' moniker. The mighty DINGWALLS!
Dingwalls was a Sunday afternoon hotbox club session in London’s Camden Town. Hardcore jazzers, soulies & most importantly DANCERS, gathered amidst the market-going public for a few intense hours of jazz fueled happiness & enlightenment. The tunes were provided by Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge & what music it was! 'Acid Jazz’ was borne out of The Belvedere & Cock Happy sessions which helped define a style that was part & parcel of Dingwalls but It was much more than that. Jazz in its entirety, no stone left unturned. It’s impossible to break down the diversity of the tunes that exploded out of the speakers at Dingwalls within an hour mix, so I’ve selected some cuts that I remember dearly. In a time when clubbing was so beautifully intense, & friendships were made on the dancefloor; what Dingwalls was ultimately all about!
