Research Topic: Identification (ID) system
Overview : I research on the colonial origin of ID techniques in the Japanese context. Japan occupied Manchuria in Northeast China from the 1930s, and issued the fingerprinted ID cards to the local Chinese. Such techniques had never been practiced in mainland Japan. The purposes of the Manchurian ID system were: to sort out the population into the “desirable” and “undesirable”, use the “desirable” as cheap labour, and watch over the “undesirable” resistance.
