As Jesus finishes His message to the four disciples, He makes it clear that there will be no way to predict His return. Unlike the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, the return of the King to consummate the Kingdom of Heaven on earth will not have a predictability. It will come like a thief in the night, and those who are unprepared will find themselves out of time. It is here in the simple story of the doorkeeper that Jesus issues the only advice that can give us hope: Be ready now for whatever today or tomorrow may bring! To be alert is to take on the persona of the ancient doorkeeper for whom staying awake during the night watch was both a duty and a privilege.
Today it is the duty and the privilege of every Christ-follower to be vigilant. We are to live wisely, confidently, expectantly, and most of all, missionally, invested in the mission of Christ through the Church to the world.
