An audience is simply a group of people that you can communicate with.
And the first step to building an audience (that a lot of people forget about) is figuring out who your audience is. Becuase the more targeted you can get... The easier it will be to grow and the more profitable.
Question to Ask #1 - Who is my target audience?
Example - Parents of junior golfers between 5-18. (if you offer elite junior coaching)
Example - Retired men who play once a week trying to break 90 (if you offer coaching programs for adults)
Example - Mini tour players looking to figure out how to take it to the next level (if you offer high level training for competitive players - Check out how Dr Rick Jensen built up this kind of audience for his busines)
Having a large social media following means nothing if it's not your target
