In January 2011, the people of Syria joined with protesters across the Arab world. Beginning with the ousting of President Ben Ali in Tunisia, Syrians demanded that President Bashar al-Assad step down. Despite successes of the Arab Spring elsewhere, al-Assad has deployed the Syrian army to keep order and the deaths of thousands of civilians have been reported since. States and international organizations have condemned the violence.
Listen to part one of two of our special episode on the current events in Syria. We interview Omar Alghabra, a Syrian-Canadian and the former Liberal MP for Mississauga- Erindale. Growing up in the country and having family there, he is personally invested in this matter and addresses whether Canada is doing enough.
