When we disobey God, we are breaking His law. These are the laws that He wrote based upon
His character––to reveal who He is. Therefore all sin is ultimately against God.
Unlike traffic court where the judge must first interpret the law, and then decide on which penalty to invoke, God knows the intent of the law and that the penalty is the same for all violators regardless of the circumstances. When we break the law, God takes if very personally and the penalty is death.
Forgiveness is a very powerful tool in the hands of a “just” God. Forgiveness is in short
supply these days. Even when offered we are a culture that is prone to be offended by the offer because it implies that we have a need to be forgiven. It implies that we have done something so terrible that unless we are “forgiven” there is an outstanding debt that will be held against our moral account.
