For Valentine’s Day we present an overtly-themed program, dark but appealing: sad songs. A song can seem “sad” for many reasons: its lyrics, its delivery, its history, or maybe just because it’s in a minor key.
We include songs that make us sad, songs that made someone else sad, songs that someone thought sounded sad. Temperance songs, songs of lost love, songs originally sung by frogs. Songs from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Entertainingly morose music. But for our finale we shatter the dark mood as we end with a tune so happy that it has the word “happy” in its title.
