Welcome to Sad Songs #2, in which we again offer a playlist of songs that make us feel sad, or think of sad things, or want to stay home and drink hot cocoa. One or two might even make you weep if you’re a girl.
There’s Irish music, music from Donovan and from the reliably depressing Wilco, Kate and Anna’s most famous song, and Dr. Dre’s lament for his brother. The Marmalade reflect on what a terrible place the world is, we hear the sad story of a clock that ticked all the seconds of a man’s life, and Mecano sing a fable about…something sad.
Blind Willie Johnson moans about how dark and cold it is, and The Red Clay Ramblers sing Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times”. Plus there are some real downers from Richard Thompson, Robin and Linda Williams, Neil Young, and Colin Hay. More than enough to wipe that smile off your face.
