This Podwireless extra isn't one of the usual monthly new release round-ups but a self indulgence I suppose. Several years ago I did one of these that celebrated the 50th anniversary of an independent label I founded in 1970 called The Village Thing and now it has come round to the 40th anniversary of the next one that I ran, Rogue Records, which put out its first releases in March 1983. Rogue was initially only meant to be for records by the bands I played in and the work of its individual members and our friends. But there was very quickly a lightbulb moment saying "Ooh, we have a record label, we can put out anything we fancy" and so it was that we became one of the pioneers of what would eventually get christened World Music some 4 years later, putting out lots of records from West Africa and eventually Madagascar in particular.
