A chronological selection of tracks sourced from 78 rpm discs tracing the early roots of this Zulu, neo-traditional style. Maskanda is most famously linked to the guitar, though not exclusively. The long syncretic tradition has incorporated a number of instruments including the concertina, accordion and violin. This compilation traces the history from early A cappella recordings, through ndlamu dance traditions, to what became known as “Zulu Guitar”.
All tracks sourced from the Flatinternational South African Audio Archive.
