U.K. bass wunderkind Rustie‘s career has exploded since his debut release Glass Swords (Warp) late last year. The album beat out work from the likes of SBTRKT and James Blake for the Guardian’s First Album Award, and filled Rustie’s schedule with DJ gigs for the foreseeable future. For a recent live session on BBC Radio One, though, Rustie ditched the Pioneers for an electric guitar and vocals from Nightwave and Aluna, completely stripping down and rebuilding two of the three songs in this ten-minute set into sparse, almost gospel-like compositions. Title track “Glass Swords,” for example, opens with the same choir-like keyboard melody, and is picked up by the warm fuzz of Rustie’s guitar build. But “Surph” gets the most drastic makeover. The high-octance original is simplified into a gentle duet between Rustie and Nightwave, a loose cover of his own song ....
