Ep 47 - Pete Seeger Tribute

When Erasing Boundaries gave a history survey of the 20th century’s great boundary-erasers last week, we highlighted the words and songs of Pete Seeger as emblematic of the show’s ethos. This week, in light of his passing, we dig in a little deeper. Over his nine and a half decades of life, Seeger tirelessly walked the walk of striving to make the world more open, welcoming, and healthy. This path was not without its obstacles–when called before the House of Un-American Activities Committee in 1955, he staunchly refused to succumb under the pressure of McCarthy’s persecution: “I say I will be glad to tell what songs I have ever sung, because singing is my business […] But I decline to say who has ever listened to them, who has written them, or other people who have sung them […] I have sung for Americans of every political persuasion, and I am proud that I never refuse to sing to an audience, no matter what religion or color of their skin, or situation in life.
