Terence Blanchard has this jazz thing down. A veteran of the genre, he seemingly grew up in the music–his career trajectory has spanned decades, labels, collaborators. So where does he erase the boundaries? The answer lies both within his comfort zone, and on the screens and stages he has graced with his compositions. He sat down with the program a couple week’s before the premiere of Champion, his first opera, and his musings about the worlds of music into which he has continually jumped, while keeping an attention to the significance of his work fill the conversation. Mere hours after his conversation, the jazzman in him jumped for joy onstage at the Jazz Standard in New York City, where he rocked some tracks off of his most recent album Magnetic.
