In March, the CD goes on sale in the UK for the first time and the Austin Metro becomes Britain’s best-selling car. In Movies, ‘The Year Of Living Dangerously’ ‘Videodrome’, ‘The Sting II’, ‘The Entity’ and ‘Local Hero’. 1983 in music, The UK Singles Chart is run by Gallup from January. We lose Karen Carpenter, just a month before her 33rd birthday. Michael Jackson debuts ‘Billie Jean’ and the eventual biggest-selling album of all time ‘Thriller’. ‘Billie Jean’ debuts on this chart as well as a number of other artists in the top 40, China Crisis, Prince, Toto (in the 80s), Level 42, Thompson Twins, as well as massive hits from Phil Collins, Men At Work, Joe Jackson, Eddy Grant, Tears For Fears and Joe Cocker/Jennifer Warnes.
