WTU's Liz Davis, advocate Matthew Frumin, Erikson Early Math Collab. on Education Town Hall 6-6-13

Where are teacher voices in Washington, DC, as deep changes to schools are proposed? Elizabeth Davis, candidate for president of the Washington Teachers Union, continues the discussion begun with Candi Peterson, candidate for vice president, on the May 30 edition.

Where are parent voices? Matthew Frumin, organizing to support good neighborhood schools, speaks about that effort and its relationship to the union and to major changes in DC public schools.

Many early childhood teachers admit they don’t like math, even fear and avoid it, with sad consequences for young students. The Erikson Early Math Collaborative and its new publication, Big Ideas of Early Mathematics (Pearson Education), aim to change that. Director Jennifer McCray and Senior Instructor Rebeca Itzkowich discuss their new book and how their approach can help improve math literacy. McCray and Itzkowich join Davis and Frumin in discussing "authentic" lessons and the need for research- and classroom-based innovation.
