Vinnie was considered to be not very bright. By age nine he was deemed orthogenetically backward and shipped off to a special school where he might be taught a simple trade. That didn’t work out well for him, he barely attended and dropped out by the time he was sixteen. He got into some small trouble over a stolen car, and joined the service to get out of jail time. And though he never did learn to read, Korea taught Mr. Leaphart enough about class and economic issues to understand that he was not going to have equal opportunities in the America he was born into.
