Hank (the old man) died when Eddie was just ten, and left it all to the boy, mostly because he had the boy parts, even if they were sickly little parts, and Eddie held onto the throne for six sickly years. His sisters plotted and schemed and waited for the sickly boy to expire, waited for their chance at the big chair. But slick Eddie threw them a curve right at the end.
The old man had a beef with Rome, mostly over the whole not staying married thing, and had pulled England away from the Church. The happy byproduct of not having a Pope’s hand in your pocket was strong economic growth and Eddie (or more likely his people, Eddie was just a kid) was dead set against the half sisters stepping up and opening the royal coffers once again to fancy hatted padres on the other side of the continent. So he wrote his sisters out of the succession and named his cousin, Jane as his heir.
