DJ Knieval started producing mixtapes at the age of 5 on his Fisher-Price tape recorder, holding down the record button with his index finger while playing his favorite songs on his dad's record player in 1980. He went on to produce some of the best tearjerker mixtapes of the 90's while in high school, unfortunately giving them away to ungrateful girls who burned them on their front porches with lighter fluid. Starting in 2001, many of his mixes now on CD could be heard on Free Radio Asheville 107.5FM, a pirate radio station in North Carolina. These mixes remained in the disc changer at the station for some years, usually playing in the wee hours of the night while no one was listening but aliens and dead rock stars. After the station's dismantling, DJ Knieval assumed his name was now appropriate, and began mixing digitally at home to disc, releasing mixes only during setbreaks of local bands.
