My first "club experience" was early 1989. I was 16-17 years old. Sgt. Pepper's Video Dance Club in Tempe AZ. They had a sound and light system like no other club. Multi-leveled checkerboard dance floor. Video screens that had abstract montages run most of the night with a few actual music videos played. The DJ Booth was in the dash of a classic hooptie. Fog would permeate through the grill of the car. And they had a makeout/chill room where they showed movies all night.
I spent quite a few nights there in 1989, and this set is a sample of what I remember hearing there that year. The first two tracks were played often in the DJ's "pre-show", which took up the first hour of the night after opening. About an hour in, the dancefloor went dark and you knew it was time to get the party started. Remember, it was 1989. Milli Vanilli was the shit. We all got stupid to it. WORD. Enjoy!
