DJ John Spart, the flamboyant DJ and libertine, originally achieved infamy through his lurid lifestyle and exploits in New York dance clubs such as Paradise. ‘Fraggle Rock’, slang for meth in elementary school, is the electroclash soundtrack that accompanied his first acts in a long career of debauchery and misbehaviour.
“Sodomy, glamour and drug addiction were the liberatory values that underlined Electroclash”, said Spart on the Miriam O’Callaghan Show. “It was a mishmash of styles and sounds and sexual persuasions and postures. Electroclash is steeped in eroticism and retroism”
Spart fondly remembers his early years as a DJ in New York: “Casey Spooner and I would straggle out of Luxx at 8am, collect Workers’ Vanguard off Uncle Jim at 299 Broadway, and strut and snap-dance to the nearest IBT, IG or ISO meeting. We were abrasive and obnoxious - feathered hair, ripped shirts, one-shoulder Tarzan tees and a sassy ortho-trot attitude!"
