The Cruise Mobile was right on time to take us off at high speed on this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner and we did it in the company of Boots Brown with his Groove 45 ‘Dynamite’. Then, somewhat breathlessly we stumbled through our playlist, which included several choices recommended by friendly faces, like Susan Bowman who pointed us to New Orleans keyboard ace, Joe Krown, who occupied the seat of the Traditional Piano Night slot at New Orleans’ Maple Leaf Bar . . . a seat once occupied by Professor Longhair and James Booker. Thanks also to Jamie Dell’Apa, for pointing us to the 1965 Blue Cat 45 by all girl group, The Goodies, and to Neil Pelligrin, for a long unreleased recording by Larry Williams and Art Neville from 1957. Larry Grogan prompted us to pull together a selection of Paul Simon songs, starting with a 60s band called Tico & The Triumphs (where ‘Tico’ was actually a young Paul Simon). There was so much more, including Becky Barksdale in our Girls & Guitars feature.
