Along with D*Note or the work of Kruder and Dorfmeister, Ian Simmonds is one
of very few producers to have successfully breached the chasm which has
traditionally kept DJ culture from more tangible, organic material. A
musician first and foremost he made his mark in the first half of the
nineties as a founding member of influential acid jazz band The Sandals
before an imploding deal with a major forced him to go it alone. As his own
music gained momentum Ian put the feelers out for an album deal, with his
last full length, "The Hill," utilising a love of beats and texture to fuse
the electronic with acoustic - a series of impressive vocal performances,
most notably from Tricky collaborator and Mercury award nominee Alison
Goldfrapp, capping an already superb longplayer.
