Although the name Rodrigeuz Jnr. has only been floating around properly for a few years, Olivier Mateu – the man behind the moniker – has been big in the dance music game for a decade now. As one half of French electro-techno act The Youngsters, he’s been a mainstay for Laurent Garnier’s F-Communications label, played at the world’s biggest clubs and festivals and won awards and accolades galore.
But after so many years of being locked into one project, he gave himself a rebirth as Rodriguez Jr., and 2008’s Piña Colada on Claude VonStroke’s Mothership vindicated his decision to go in a new direction. Emerging from the minimal trend but with more musicality, warmth, groove and vigour than a lot of the genre, it was one of those refreshing, effervescent records that stuck in your head and really brought something new to the table.
