Serge Santiago and Tom Neville are two very talented DJ-producers who were doing a pretty solid trade by themselves. But with their Retro/Grade project, launched late last year, they’ve reached giddy new heights, and forged a distinctive future-retro sound which has seen them signed up by relaunched Virgin offshoot Deconstruction, and support the likes of Deadmau5 on tour. The seeds of the project were first planted back in 2004, when they worked together on a stunning re-edit of Kano’s Italo-disco classic It’s A War – still a firm favourite round these parts – and after seeing how well they gelled on that supposed one-off project, and how well it was received, they slowly started setting about amassing banks and banks of humming machinery, vintage synths and retro analog studio kit.
