Kidkanveil’s one of those fine UK talents that hasn’t had the credit he deserves. We were first played one of his records in the back of someone’s car on a Sunday afternoon in London by a friend who knew him, and we were grabbed by his funky hip-hop flavours and humorous lyrics. His first album Problems & Solutions featured guest spots from excellent names like Yarah Bravo (of DJ Vadim fame), Jehst, Lateef and Sir Smurf Lil’, while the brilliantly-named follow-up Back Off Man, I’m A Scientist saw him rope in Bonobo for a collaboration, who it seems is a big fan.
Remixes for the likes of Alice Russell, Nautral Self and DJ Vadim followed, and his Stateless project was signed to !K7 a few years back (a wonderful band who create delicate, melancholy beauties). But now with his new album Basho Basho he’s turned attention to the murky depths of dubstep and gritty UK bass music, with a tinge of Oriental flavour (he lists his location on MySpace as ‘Tokyorkshire’)
