The tradition of re-recording an pre-existing instrumental piece of music but slightly altering elements of it's arrangement to make a new “version” is well documented within reggae music. But how do songs from other genres sound when they get covered or “versioned” by reggae musicians?
These tracks are not all straight cover version as such, but are all in some way recognisable as their original counterparts. Rhythm and Blues, Pop, Soul, Indie Rock, Grunge, Choral and Hip Hop songs are all represented here, and while no cover of a classic can ever claim to be quite as good as the original, this podcast makes the point that perhaps there is enough validity in just making it different.
