Dessi DJs continue our week-long series of World City broadcasts with an exploration of the music of the Greek Underground with London-based band Mavrika. Mavrika explores the traditional music of Greece, Cyprus and Asia Minor from the 1920s and ’30s along with exciting new material. The sound is often raw and sparse, yet also lyrical and dramatic. Led by British/Greek Cypriot guitarist and bouzouki player Chris Morphitis and singer Katina Kangaris, Mavrika works with London-based musicians to bring these songs right up to date with electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and voice. The 'Dessi DJs' consist of Mark Greenfield and Drew Salida from the Sephardic Flamenco outfit 'Los Desterrados'.
