The Importance of Africana Hi-Stories - How might oral history be (re)defined in Africana Studies? Instead of traditional ways of centering “history” as a discipline, Africana Oral History defines oral “hi-story” based on three components: (1) voiced, first-hand accounts of an elder narrator; (2) direct questions asked by a younger interviewer who “sits at the feet of the elder”; and (3) communal ways of knowing informed by spoken answers of the past. The three components combined allow African elders to transmit wisdom to younger generations and for younger
generations to interpret that wisdom in a larger context of past hi-stories to inform the present and the future. Lock into Difficult Discussions every Monday 5-7PM EST at www.theblackroseofdurhamradio.com
