This week on The Copyright Experiment, we discuss a strange recent controversy over the limits of Fair Use and its protection of Parody. Specifically, we chronicle the rise and eventual back down by the producers of a delightfully empowering online video produced by girls toy maker Goldieblox. In the video, we hear little girls singing a parody version of the Beastie Boys’ “Girls”, with lyrics meant to inspire young girls to desire more than dolls and pink things. There has been lots of “he-said she-said” talk going on about this, so we get to the bottom of it and play judge and jury on the video’s legality.
