Episode 1 looked at the impact of Luigi Russolo, and the noise generating instruments he made to emulate the mechanical sounds of the city. We heard how he placed those noises into a musical and artistic context by creating noise-orchestras to perform alongside, and independently of, traditional orchestras in concert halls.
Meanwhile...in Soviet Russia, physicist Leon Theramin invented a device that was to become the first electronic instrument to be mass produced, also performing in concert halls. The instrument went on to be used in many Hollywood sci-fi epics, and ironically, in films carrying a subtext of Cold War propaganda by the West.
