August 7, 2004, thirtyninehotel opens. “From the beginning, the entire thing was very magical. I felt like it was bigger than me or anybody else. it was its own spirit, it was the spirit of love and disco that manifested everything. I was just a vessel.” Gelareh Khoie lived and worked in Honolulu coordinating countless art and music events in the mid- to late-90s before encountering disco as the new millennium arrived, soon leading her and her closest friends along a journey of fostering community and facilitating the cross-pollination of subcultures in what became thirtyninehotel. Here, with Brooklyn resident and co-founder of Love Injection, Barbie Bertisch, Gelareh shares her story.
