One of the most useful ways to read the Bible is to insert yourself into the story. As a boy I always enjoyed reading biographies because I would see myself in all those roles from mountain man to a general leading his army. What I wanted to be depended upon what I was reading that day.
When you read the book of Daniel I would hope you could put yourself into that scenario because the truth is we are in a very similar world to Daniel’s. Daniel was a righteous and competent man who had great influence on the secular culture into which he had been carried. He didn’t live in a world of his own making but external events carried him along just as they carry us along.
Because of the sin of Israel the Babylonians ruled. It was the failure of Israel not the superiority of Babylon that caused the captivity.
